Deacon Nominations

Deacon nominations will be accepted through Sunday, April 5. Please read the biblical qualifications for a deacon and the ministry expectations for a deacon. Spend some time in prayer, and then submit your nominations using the form below.

Biblical Qualifications for a Deacon

A man of good reputation (Acts 6:3) a good reputation among those in the church, as well as those outside the church

Full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:3) bigness of character, in spiritual outlook and personal dedication

Full of wisdom (Acts 6:3) wisdom born in a relationship with the Holy Spirit

Full of faith (Acts 6:5) like Stephen’s, a deacon’s power depends on faith

Worthy of respect (1 Timothy3:8) one who possesses Christian purpose, who has great reverence for spiritual matters; one whose word carries weight

Not hypocritical (1 Timothy 3:8) dependable and responsible, in control of his tongue

Not drinking a lot of wine (1 Timothy 3:6) temperate in living, steward of good influence, doing all to the glory of God

Not greedy for money (1 Timothy 3:8) a right attitude toward material possessions, not eager to exploit others for his own gain or profit

A holder of the faith (1 Timothy 3:9) a man who gives strength to the church fellowship and one who possesses spiritual integrity beyond reproach

Tested and proved (1 Timothy 3:10) a man who demonstrates his spiritual qualifications before being elected to serve as a deacon; tested and found true

Blameless (1 Timothy 3:10) a man against whom no charge of wrongdoing can be brought with success

Christian family life (1 Timothy 3:11-12) a man whose family is well cared for, whose family relationships are healthy and growing

Husband of one wife (1 Timothy 3:12) a model of faithful devotion to one spouse, committed to the sanctity of the marriage bond (At South Gate, we believe this to mean that divorced or single men are not necessarily unqualified.)

Ministry Expectations for Deacons

  • Be faithful in a daily time in God’s Word and in prayer.
  • Be faithful in small group attendance and worship.
  • Be faithful in tithing and giving offerings.
  • Be dedicated to the Lord, loyal to the pastor, and have a heart for the ministry and the unity of South Gate.
  • Be committed to the deacon ministry through prayer, service, and attendance.
  • Be committed to serving in the small group ministry as a deacon leader.
  • Be committed to serving in other ministries as the Lord directs.
  • Be a good steward in their relationship with their wife and children.
  • Be realistic about any life situations or stresses that would make this an inopportune time to serve as a deacon.

The above list of expectations is not an exhaustive list, but rather demonstrates the high standard of separated Christian living necessary for both the deacon and his spouse.
